Practicing Dialectical Behavioral Therapy with a Focus on Addressing Issues Faced by Single Parent, Low Income, Interracial and Non-traditional Families

This presentation will provide attendees with an overview of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and how DBT can be applied to the families of adolescents and young adults in the context of eating disorder recovery. Special issues for family treatment in blended, transracial, adoptive, LGBTQ, lower income, and single-parent families will be discussed, in addition to looking at common adolescent/parent dialectical dilemmas and how to find the middle path within the family milieu. The presentation will also discuss the benefits and challenges of applying different family interventions with diverse families. This information will be imparted via presentation of theoretical information, relevant research, as well as engagement in experiential activities during the course of the session.
