Not just a Girl's Disease: Treating Boys with Eating Disorders from a Psychological and Dietary Perspective

Working with children and teens pose challenging problems for professionals given the wide range of disordered eating presentations and co-morbid disorders. Studies, research, trainings, and material are primarily female focused. However, boys do get eating disorders and have different clinical and nutritional needs. This workshop will address issues related to presentation, assessments, clinical and nutritional management and interventions specific to working with adolescent boys.   Topics will include prevalence of diagnosis, obstacles to treatment, socio-cultural influences, peer relationships, nutrition management, body image issues, developmental issues, and family components such as father hunger issues as it relates to working with males. Use will be made of clinical examples, as well as group discussion and participation.
